Life Amphibious with Lloyd Godson & Carolina Sarasiti

The Journey

Life Amphibious is an adventurous expedition that blends Greek mythology and seafaring adventure with the risks and thrills of high-tech invention. Australian Aquanaut and marine biologist Lloyd Godson and his Greek partner Carolina Sarasiti will migrate 100 nautical miles through the Ionian Sea from Corfu to Ithaca off the west coast of mainland Greece (in two separate phases).

Ionian Odyssey Map

Phase 1 (pilot or test phase): Fiskardo, Kefalonia to Vathy, Ithaca

Distance: 15 nautical miles

Departure: Monday September 28th 2009 from Fiskardo, Kefalonia

Arrival: Saturday October 3rd 2009 to Vathy, Ithaca
A fit marathon Athlete and Australian Geographic's 2007 Australian Adventurer of the Year, Lloyd will be "pedalling" underwater using "Omer 6", a one-seater, custom-made, human-powered submarine designed and built by the
Ecole de technologie superieure (School of Higher Technology) in Montreal, Quebec, for the International Submarine Races.

The submarine features a 'non-propeller' design as the means of propulsion, allowing Lloyd to explore the secrets of the ocean in a unique and unusual way. The "wet" free-flooding submarines will be fitted with SCUBAPRO / UWATEC SCUBA (Self-contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) equipment, video cameras and underwater sensors for observation and research.

The Ecole de technologie superieure's "Omer 6" uses biology inspired technologies (biomimietics) that imitate sea creatures such as penguins. "Omer 6" set a new world speed record (4.916 knots) in the one-seater / non-propeller category at the 10th International Submarine Races held in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, in June 2009.

Carolina and the Life Amphibious team will travel beside Lloyd on-board their project's support vessel, Neptune 3, kindly donated by Andreas Petalas at
Fiskardo's Nautical & Environmental Club. Together they will explore the Ionian Islands of Kefallonia and Ithaca

Phase 2 (expedition phase): Corfu to Ithaca

Distance: 100 nautical miles

Departure: 2010 from Corfu (dates to be announced)

Arrival: Approximately 2 weeks later in Ithaca
Assuming Phase 1 of the Life Amphibious expedition is a success in 2009, Lloyd plans to cover the 100 nautical mile distance to Ithaca from the island of Corfu in the University of Bath's "SULIS" and ETS's "Omer 7" submarines. "Omer 7" is the latest generation of Omer submarine. It is a two-seater non-propeller submarine which also uses its lateral wings' movement to gain speed. During the 10th International Submarine Races "Omer 7" recorded a maximum speed of 5.1333 knots.Stay tuned for further details!

The Team

The skills and experience of the individual expedition members together form a remarkable and talented team consisting of aquanaut explorers and biomimetic mechanical engineers.

Lloyd Godson

In April 2007, expedition leader Lloyd Godson successfully completed The BioSUB Project in Australia for which he was awarded the 2007 Australian Geographic Adventurer of the Year. The project was the winning entry in the Australian Geographic $50,000 "Live Your Dream" Wildest Adventure Competition. From Discovery Channel to the Daily Telegraph, Lloyd's amazing underwater experiment has made headlines all around the world. In the wacky scientific experiment, Lloyd lived for 12 days in the world's first underwater habitat incorporating a plant-based life support system.

Lloyd is a modern-day underwater pioneer with a passion for delivering innovative educational projects. Together, Lloyd and his team want to push the boundaries of future development in the technologies critical to undersea exploration and inspire the next generation of environmentalists, scientists and adventurers in the process.

Carolina Sarasiti

Carolina is a copywriter and marketing specialist. She was responsible for the Public Relations, Marketing and Advertising of The BioSUB Project. She speaks four languages (English, Greek, German and Italian) which allow her to bring projects like The BioSUB Project and Life Amphibious to the attention of the global community and attract worldwide publicity.

Dr. William Megill and BURST

Dr. William Megill group's research is focused on developing tools for the study of the coastal marine environment. They design and build sensors which they incorporate into small submersibles and boats, then field test in the open ocean. Many of their designs draw their inspiration from the animals which live and thrive in the coastal zone. He also supervises the BURST (Bath University Racing Submarine Team) who will design and build one of the expedition's human-powered submarines at the University of Bath Ocean Technologies Laboratory. Dr Megill and the BURST students plan to have their Sulis submarine ready for Phase 2 of the expedition to be completed in 2010.

Simon Joncas and the Omer submarine team

Simon Joncas is an assistant professor at the Ecole de Technologie Superieure (ETS) in Montreal, Canada. As an engineering student at ETS, he was team leader of the Omer submarine team from 1994 to 1997; years in which Omer 1, 2 and 3 were designed and built. Since 1997 he has continued contributing to the team and became faculty advisor of the Omer submarine team in 2001. Over the years, he has participated to six international submarine races in which he helped the team set new speed records in both propeller driven and non-propeller driven submarine categories. As of 2009, the Omer team holds the world speed records for one-seater and two-seater propeller driven categories and one-seater non-propeller category. Young engineers Terry Savard and Tommy Gagnon (pictured left) and the 2010 Omer submarine team leader Jacques Boivin will join Simon in Greece for Phase 1 of the Life Amphibious in September 2009.
